By far one of my favorite 80s songs is “Ballerina Girl” by Lionel Ritchie (followed closely by “Dancing on the Ceiling”, on the same album).

My precious niece is turning two next week. I’ve seen a lot of Pinterest and Facebook posts of darling babes and toddlers in tutus, and decided that my niece would join the ranks. With a little time and nimble fingers, a tutu was born!

I used two instructional blogs —  (one) for waist size and how-to steps, then (two) for how long to make the tutu itself.

I used three spools of tulle in two colors, and it only took about 45 minutes. The most difficult part was ensuring that the waistband was going to be the right size. I guessed incorrectly the first time, and had to add 2.5″ of elastic on to the band – but it wasn’t difficult at all. I did double layers of tulle all the way around, then filled in with single layers. This helps with volume and texture. It’s important to do this while your elastic is stretched — not only does it make it easier for you, but it ensures that you have full coverage.

En pointe!

I even had time left over in my episode of “Chuck” to make matching hair clips!

I can’t wait to show you pictures of her twirling in it!
