One of the many reasons I love living in West Virginia is the summer evenings. In Texas, during the summer, you can’t comfortably be outside until after 10pm (if ever), but  in WV it starts cooling off around 7pm and doesn’t generally get unbearable to start.

We love having parties in our backyard and take any occasion to celebrate back there (e.g. our Centennial Party last year). Recently, we hosted a fundraiser for the Morgantown Chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW) and had 40ish people milling about the house and backyard.

I had a blast! We had Mountain Sugar, a 4 piece string band, playing on our stone patio, yard Jenga and cowboy golf going in the side yards, and volunteers wrapping books for the Appalachian Book Project in the dining room. Food was displayed in the sunroom and we had the beverage table outside to encourage people to move around.

Food prep was one of the easiest I’ve done. Thankfully, many of the NOW members volunteered to help with food and alcohol, so food prep was pretty easy for me. I did find some quick prep finger foods that were a big hit!

Cheeseburger Skewers -I served these with a dipping sauce from skinnytaste.com: Mix 1/4 cup mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon mustard, 1 teaspoon dill pickle juice, 4 teaspoons ketchup, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Ham and swiss roll-ups

Marinated mushrooms

S’more’s cups – 1 box of cookies yielded 18 cups but I had to make the crust stretch a bit on the last 6 cups

I had a blast at this party. I met some new neighbors, was able to support an organization I’m passionate about and candidates I hope are successful in November, and made more memories in our backyard!!
